The first Friends of Art - Masters and Music event of the year will focus on how the diverse cultures of our community are portrayed and expressed through the arts and how the traditions and heritage of many cultures have shaped and enriched us all.

The South Omaha Mural Project
The South Omaha Mural Project is a series of ten community-based murals depicting the culture, history, and ethnic heritage of groups that settled in South Omaha neighborhoods, known in the late 1800s and early 1900s as the melting pot of Omaha. Already completed murals include:
  • South Omaha-themed “Magic City" at 24th & N streets
  • Lithuanian-themed,“Sieninis Paveikslas,“ on the Lithuanian Bakery at 5217 S 33rd Ave.
  • Mexican-themed “Del Futuro Al Pasado” on the El Mercado Building at 4907 S. 25th St.
  • Polish-themed “Nostrovia on Dinker’s bar at 2368 S. 29th St.
  • Croatian-themed “Zajednica”on Bere’s Hall, 36th and W St.
Each mural is designed through a process of four community meetings and four design work meetings that include discussion and artistic exercises concerning the identity, culture, and heritage of the particular community/neighborhood. Currently the artists are working at 36th and Q Streets on the “Nebraska Mural” Project for the state’s 150th celebration. Future murals will include an Irish mural and three murals that will share the stories of the peoples of Salvadoran, Guatemalan and Honduran heritage living. Mural artists who will be presenting are Mike Girón, Richard Harrison, Rebecca Van Ornam, Hugo Alberto Zamorano. Southomahamuralproject.com
